I want to make a cp soap that looks like a lemon custard topped with whipped cream.

My thought was to make one soap base with the lemon or grapefruit scent (which was pink grapefruit colored for me) and then on the top, add a second batch of olive oil/coconut oil soap (which turned out very white for me) on the top as a "whipped cream" kind of thing.

So my question is. . can I use two different soap recipes together in the same batch? How do I time the batches so that I don't cool the bottom layer too much before the top gets done? Any advice for getting a whipped look? And do you think this would even work?

I have today off and I thought I would give it a try so any advice would be much appreciated.

yes, you can use two different recipes - as soon as the bottom layer is relatively thick, you can add the top layer. just pour from a low height, over the back of a spoon, or you can also spoon it carefully over the top of the first layer. a little bit of texture on top will help it look like whipped cream.

i also find the layers stick together a bit better if i use the CPOP method and gel both halves. you may not need to do that if you don't have too much time elasped between layers.

i actually used to make a soap that looked something like you're describing - i don't have a pic anymore, but anne-marie mentioned it in her blog a while back, and you can see the picture here if it helps:

Your soap is probably where I got the idea. . I find myself dreaming in my sleep of interesting soap combinations so this must have been subliminal!! Yours is just beautiful.

The only problem I have with CPOPing is that it changed the color of the grapefruit soap last night from a pure pink grapefruit color to a gold color in CPOP. The CP version I made alongside didn't change color. So I want the pink with the whipped cream for the grapefruit soap. However, if I was making lemon, I think CPOP would work fantastic. So I will give it a whirl with regular CP first today to retain the color and if that doesn't work, I will try with the CPOP. I don't have any colorants and don't really feel like mail ordering for them for a small batch. I keep thinking Joann Fabrics or Michael's would have soap colors but they don't!

Thanks so much for all your help over the past week. I am so excited about trying this! I hope your Dog recovers well!

Lisa

Be aware that citrus oils tends to fade over time unless they are anchored.

I don't know much about anchoring. For a grapefruit FO, what could I anchor with to retain the grapefruit only smell? Also, since I am doing it over the weekend, any suggestions for getting the anchor at a regular type of store (vs. internet)? Thanks in advance.

Lisa,
For an anchor try Litsea, Vetiver or Patchouli.

Well, the layered soap is resting in the oven. Here's another question. I threw in some chunks of other soaps in the layers for contrast. When you CPOP, will those other soaps melt in (and lose the chunk effect)? How would one go about adding other "inserts" and still CPOP? Should I have just done regular CP on this?

It depends how old the soap chunks of the other soaps are. Most will not melt if you add it to another batch, then CPOP.

It worked great! I've tried to attach the photo! I was going for an architectural soap--imagine a snowbank (with tan boulders) and a blue sky with little clouds--look at it abstractly and you'll see I almost got it! I scented with peppermint EO and it reminds me of a winter snowy day!

The shreds kind of moved around, but this was for fun so I am fine with it. Now I want to make a white batch the length of my wood mold, unmold and use a cookie cutter all down the length to make a long shape (like a moon or a star) and then embed the whole thing in another batch. Will that work or will the cookie cutter log totally sink to the bottom? Any suggestions?

pour half at fairly thick trace, carefully lay your embed on top, and then pour the remaining soap over. it's tricky to get it thick enough to hold the embed but thin enough to pour.

Thanks. I will try over nex couple of days!

And would you agree it is best to make a log, cut it down length of log and then embed. Or should I just cut "cookies" and randomly embed those?
