Hi all! It's my first posting and I'm a soap noob. My girlfriend and I have made 2 CP batches so far and would like to eventually start making soap for ourselves instead of buying commercial soap. I've used an olive oil (80%) and coconut oil (20%) recipe to clean myself and was curious what it would do for my hair. I tried it and it removed all the oil from my hair like normal shampoo and felt clean. Is this safe? Would my hair fall off or anything?! Thanks all!

No, your hair wont fall out  It's actually safer than bottled shampoo.
The thing you want to do is balance the somewhat Alkali PH of the soap (which can cause build up) by neutralizing it with a hair rinse of vinegar (like apple cider) or diluted lemon juice. If your hair is dark you can add a few drops of Rosemary EO for shine, if it's light do the same with Chamomile EO. If you google hair rinses you can find recipes online.

Next time you can make a bar for hair by lowering the coconut oil per cent and adding oils that are good for your hair like johoba, avocado, shea butter and cocoa butter. If you have dry hair adding castor oil will help too but sometimes makes a softer bar. But you can experiment and find the recipe that works best on your hair type.

Welcome!
I wish I could use my soaps as a hair shamppo, but it wasn't meant to be. Good luck with your quest!

I hated the one from burts bees it made my hair all greasy and weird. The one from Lush was nice but made my hair just limp and lifeless. I've tried my own soap not formulated to hair and it ranked ok but not something I would use every time. I just stick with my tea tree shampoo because nothing else gets my hair clean soft and shiny all at once.

Some people do really well using homemade soap to wash their hair. Others, not so good. If it works for you - great! If your hair starts looking dull or feels limp, try an ACV rinse - 2 Tbs in 2 cups water, pour over hair, then rinse well. If you have hard water, an ACV rinse is usually necessary now and then.

Never mind, I googled ACV...I'm so blind (apple cider vinegar). Thanks for the hair rinse advice.
