I just cut a batch of Goats milk soap that has some DOS. Would someone please remind me what causes that. I read it somewhere but it's been so long since I've seen it I can't remember.

Rancid oils or butters usually cause DOS.

I think I would have smelled anything rancid. ( and would have thrown it out. Can anything else cause that?
I've been making alot of soap lately and only this one had DOS. Maybe half a dozen spots . I can count on one hand how many times this has happened in the 4 years I've been making CP.

The oil or butter could have just started to get rancid or old and you wouldn't have necesarry smelled anything off. How old are your oils or butters?

The coconut oil I've had 4 months (Soapers choice) Everything else is food grade. Bought no more then 3 months ago. Caster oil from BB, Olive oil from a grocery outlet, and Tallow the day after it's killed.I render it all then freeze it in the right size to make my batches. The goats milk is powdered organic from Wegmans. I thought maybe I failed to desolve all the GM properly. And I don't use any butters. today I made Vanilla ,I doubt Id be able to see DOS since it will turn brown as it cures.

Here's a thought...so take it with a grain of salt; :)
One time I bought olive oil at a discount store and soaped it, I had problems. Come to find out the oil was adulterated with soy.

made 3 other batches with that same bottle (large) ( Bertoli) Thats why I thought that maybe it had somthing to do with the goats milk. Which was powdered. But I disolved it in water and added it at light trace as always. :?

If the spots are slightly brownish and not orange, it might be specks of not-quite-dissolved powdered milk. I've had that happen to me, before. It was only a cosmetic problem, but whooooo was it ugly.

I agree with magic-hands. I would seriously doubt it would be DOS since you just cut it. You see DOS appear weeks to months after the soap has been made or while in the final curing stage in my experience. Goat milk can "burn" in the lye and appear as orange spots or slivers, so you always want to make sure it's dissolved well if you add it to lye water or add it late in the trace stage and stir well. I add lye to my frozen goat milk--- sprinkle, stir, sprinkle , stir--- stir, stir, then add to oils. By the way, you can still use your soap, even dos soap can be used-- just looks really bad. Also, the dos soap will seem to "spread" where a burn soap won't change. This has been my experience.

thank you all for the help. I think this soap will be ok in that case. But I'll watch it for the next 6 weeks to be sure.
