This probably is a silly question, but here goes nothing...

I would love to make CP soap and was doing my homework on the costs of different places online for pricing on the oils I'd like to use. Many of them offer refined and unrefined versions of the same oils, some with a big difference price-wise.

My question is this: in CP soapmaking, does it really matter? What is the difference in the end product if there is any?

Thanks in advance. I checked out the whole forum and didn't see anything answering my particular question.

I use refined. For me, most unrefined have an unpleasant smell. For soap, it's still soap in the end. No matter which one you use.

Thanks soapbuddy!

Another question then, just to clarify... if I was to make soap with the unrefined, would the unpleasant smell make its way into the final soap? I don't mind spending the extra few dollars in the end if it gives me a better quality product.

I could smell the unrefined in the soap I made. Some people like that smell. Also with the unrefined it has more unsaponifiables. Which means soap made with unrefined could be softer.

i always use the unrefined shea and the unrefined cocoa butter...in all my soaps and my cremes. The smell doesnt come through unless I want it to....

like in my Cocoa creme, the unrefined cocoa butter is the ONLY oil/butter in it, so of course it smells like it......but it smells delicious....lol

my shea cream, like the one above, the unrefined shea is the only oil/butter, and it does smell like it. The shea I use though, it's a pretty pale yellow colored shea and the smell isnt' unpleasant. smells like shea...lol

in soaps though, even as high as 10% of each one (the cocoa and shea) the smell still doesnt come through.

And I do believe that it DOES make a difference whether or not it's refined or not. (Sorry Soapbuddy, you know I love ya!) During the refining process, they take out alot of the good stuff that's so good for your skin. and shea, it's got a high quantity of things it in that cant be saponified, so it stays pretty much "as is" throughout the soaping process and in the end product.
