Since I'm up, I might as well post this:

On my most recent batch, all was going smoothly until I got to my coloring phase:

Turns out, I added FD&C Yellow #5 colorant to the soap mix at trace, hoping it would turn my mixture a familiar yellow.

Instead, I got floaties. I thought I'd be able to zap them with the blender, but then soap started to seize! After the CPOP, the end result was a lightly colored soap with DARK orange speckles.

I didn't think the colorant's speckles would be an issue until the other day when I used the soap. This soap made yellow lather! And well, my hands turned yellow--if only for a few seconds. That was when I read up on the stuff.

Oops! It's added to a liquid and THEN to the soap.

Anywho: Is there a way to fix this? Or is this batch color cursed?

I did the *exact* same thing once...and grating and doing a ziplock rebatch allowed me to smoosh some of the grains to even it out, but it still was not perfect. And, I had diluted it some before going in the mix. Just didn't get all the grains out! :GRRR:

So, good enough for friends and family, but not much more!

those dyes are CONCENTRATED, too!

it only takes a pinhead amount of the dry dye to make a nice yellow in a couple pounds of soap. more than that, and you'll have yellow you can see from space. they also intensify during gel.

using the pink, you only need enough to get a pale salmon-ish, and it still turns bright pink in soap. if you get it bright before the soap gels, you will get darn near radioactive pink glowing soap.

not that i admit to having ever done this, of course....

You can shred it and add it to another batch to minimize the yellow staining. If you used the color dry, you need very, very little.

(It also helps to mix the color into something first, before adding it to your soap.)

I think I'm going to shred this into a new batch of the same recipe.

Another problem I'm having with it is that I went scent happy: Heaven Scent's Wash Day plus a whole lot of Lemongrass EO. Probably 2:1. I probably should've gone 3:1 or 4:1.

My sister says this one "smells too much like soap." I can see this working out much better once rebatched. Maybe it will smell less like citrus-scented Ajax dish soap. Bleh!
