Teach Soap

Hi,

First of all, thanks so much to the moderators who helped me with the initial soaping questions I had. Your encouragement gave me the boost I needed. .

I made my first batch today and I got a nice trace and everything. Initially the soap was this pumpkin coloured orange but after reading a few other posts I came to the conclusion that it's because I used red palm oil:(. I didn't realize initially that there was a different type.

I plan to try a different batch tomorrow and I'll leave out the palm oil but my other worry is that I can only find liquid coconut oil. Will this pose a problem in soap making?

Is it 100% Coconut Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil? These are a bit different.
Coconut Oil is always liquid above about 76F - I know it is Summer in the Southern part of the world and it may NOT get solid on you except on cloudy/cool days.
You could put it in the fridge and see if it gets solid. ( I don't think Fractionated will get solid.) They are different and have different SAP values.
Maybe SoapBuddy will have a better clue.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that it's a 76 degree oil because it is pretty cloudy.

One other thing I forgot to ask: how can I be sure that the soap is fully cured? I know that the rule is generally 4 - 6 weeks but I'm not sure what signs I should be looking for.

Unrefined palm is bright orange. I only use a little bit for color.

To see if your soap is cured do the "zap" test. Wet a part of your soap and put your tongue on it - if it zaps like a 9 volt battery that's lye - if ir just tastes bad - it's soap.....
