Teach Soap

I have made several batches of CP goat milk soap. Most have turned out great but there has been a few recipes that after 6 weeks are not completely saponified. I think they are but when you cut into it there is an orange-ish center and it smells lye-ee. Over the next few days it changes into the color of the rest of the soap but if you cut it in half again it has the orange center. Some soaps are 2 or 3 months old and have this. Does this mean there is too much lye or what? Although some of these are superfated at trace. When I use them they seem less moisturizing then my other soaps. Thanks for your help

What was your recipe and how hot/warm did you soap at?

I wouldn't worry about it, as long as there is no seeping lye or lye pockets.

Most time, the final color of the soap is the result of it being
exposed to the air.

What you are seeing/smelling when you cut into a bar has not yet been
exposed to the air, and that will happen no matter how large or small you
cut your bars.

As for the superfatting at trace...lye does not discriminate. If you add oils or
butters at trace, the lye will still go at them. Why waste the time, just add them
all together and let the lye 'do it's thing'

I thought what supperfatting at trace did was you got to pick what fat was giving the extra moisturizing property? Is that not right?

As for my recipe there was a honey and cream one

3oz lye
12 oz goat milk (with 1/2 c. cream exchanged for milk)
12 oz hydrogenated vegetable oil
4.5 oz olive oil
5 oz canola oil
1 tsp honey at trace

The other was the same recipe except no cream just milk and no honey but it had oatmeal and vanilla EO at trace. This is my basic recipe and I have done it several time no problems. There are a few other recipes too that I have done it but I need to do a little digging to find them.
