Is there a difference between palm kernel oil and palm oil? Also, I have palm shortening, can I use that in place of palm oil?
Thanks

Here is a good article on Wikipedia that tells you the difference in the oils. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_oil

As for using the palm shortening, I use it all the time in my soaps. I believe it is just the hydrogenated and refined form of the liquid. The red liquid oil has better more healing properties. Someone correct me if I am wrong about all this. But I think it will exchange just fine.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out for you.

Palm Kernel and palm have different SAP values. You cannot sub one for the other, unless you recalculate your recipe..

No problem! :)
Just make sure that your shortening is all palm and not a blend.

It is all palm oil, it came from tropical traditions www.tropicaltraditions.com If you have a chance and can take a look at it, that would be great. I didn't buy it for soapmaking, but I have it and thought I might be able to use it. This is what it says on their site.

" Palm shortening is derived from palm oil (read about Virgin Palm Oil here.) In its natural state, palm oil is a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, with most of the unsaturated fat being monounsaturated fat. Palm shortening is palm oil that has some of its unsaturated fats removed, giving it a very firm texture, and high melting point. The melting point of our Organic Palm Shortening is 97 degrees F., making it very shelf stable. It is NOT hydrogenised, and contains NO trans fats! It is great for deep-fat frying and baking, and is not prone to rancidity. Since it has been separated from some of the unsaturated portion of the oil, it is colorless and odorless, and will not affect the taste of foods like Virgin Palm Oil does"

Please let me know what you think
Thanks
