Teach Soap

I'm going on the cheap for my first small CP batch so I'm gathering stuff to use from around the house.

For mixing the lye-water, is a chinese soup tupperware container ok (it's the big 1-liter size)? Or do I risk the container getting too hot, possibly deforming, and risking spill?

Just make sure that's the plastic is fairly thick and it's nice and tall. Does your container have some kind of a spout?
Otherwise you run the risk of spilling the lye where you don't want it.

It shouldn't get to hot if you use very cold water to mix with the lye (which you should do anyway). I agree with soapbuddy, try to use something with a spout. I went to the dollar store and got a pyrex 2 cup glass measuring cup and it's been with me for 5 years now and I use it for every batch...except the very large batches. For that I have a 4 cup identical one.

Just be very careful with a glass cup. It will get etched from the lye water over a period of time and can crack or shatter.
Thank goodness I had my cup in the sink, but it was no fun picking up shards of glass everywhhere with lye water mixed with it.

I agree....a spout makes things much easier. Hard plastic over here!

I use a Rubbermate pitcher, in fact I use 5 of them. They work great, plenty tall and hold up against the heat.

I agree - great idea!
I also keep my lye water container in the sink... just in case! =)

Always keep it in the sink. One time it came up to about 90% full and that reminded me the sink is a good idea!
