Teach Soap

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and last night I tried making my first batch of goat's milk soap using the CPHP method. Unfortunately it died right before my eyes. I know that I overcooked it. I caught it before it erupted all of the counter but didn't continue stirring it as often as I needed to.

So I have two questions:
1. When you add your lye to the melted oils in the CP, what temperature is the lye?
2. My CP only goes from high to low. I kept it on low the entire time. Should I have just turned it off while the soap was cooking?

Also as a side note, never try to make soap and watch American Idol at the same time!

I guess I don't understand your question.
When I make CP soap I mix my Lye/Water in a plastic pitcher then warm my oils in another pan to a temp. I like (take them off the fire) then when the Lye/water has cooled to be the same temp. or cooler than the oils are, I mix them then.
If the oils have cooled off too much, then I just put the oils back on the fire to get to the right temp. (and then I take the oils off the fire) before I mix in the Lye/water.
Is that what you are asking or are you making Hot Process Soap =HP?

sgsoap, yes I am making HP soap. I wasn't sure if the lye/water and the oils needed to be about the same temp as in the CP method.

I just realized it might be confusing because the letters CP mean crock pot instead of cold process. Sorry!

I mix my lye water and oils at around 100 to 110 degrees. I do it now by touch, but if you haven't made that many batches, I would suggest getting a thermometer.

When I use my crockpot, it's turned on low and the soap is done in about 45 minutes.
