I've never used KOH...sorry!

I *have* had wonderful results with NaOH though, so "easier on the skin" KOH compared to NaOH? I just don't think of homemade soap as harsh...

Once the soap saponifies there is no lye left. I would not want KOH or NAOH on on my skin
One makes better liquid soap, the other makes a solid soap.

Thank-you for your responses. It seems important to me to get my mind straight on how things work. It also seems to me like some hand made soaps are hard on the skin and others seem to be emoluants. I was very happy to find that straight animal tallow soap seems to cure my dry itchy skin. I am eager to start experimenting with the natural oils. I tried hemp oil and coconut oil and like you said I had trouble with it hardening. It finally did but it took forever. Now I know why. I love the resulting soap though. Thanks Buck
