Teach Soap

Well ladies and gents i am thinking of doing c&p but i would like to know what i am getting myself in for before i start .
I have a few q's
1 how much does the equipment cost ?
2 how much do i use of each thing?
3 how long do the soaps take to cure before i use them or sell them?
4 Were do i get my things from as in fats and oils ?
5 and is there anything else that i should know?

This is one of those questions that is identical to how long is a piece of string?

They all depend a great deal but can say on number 1, that when you do buy your equipment buy the best you can afford. This is sort of a golden rule to me with any tools or equipment.
On number 3 I would not recommend you sell anytime soon. Give yourself plenty of practice and this includes curing times in practice. Soap can get weird latter on and you want to know that. As for curing times I seem to see it done around 4-6 weeks.
Then lastly on number 5. I would read that newbie thread on here. Aside from that practice with the cheap stuff and perfect that before you go out and buy expensive oils and fats.

It is overwhelming to start, but the millersoap.com is a great place to start. As far as equipement, stay away from heavy glass when mixing your lye solutions. The heaviest glass will etch and shatter after time. I invested in a stanless steel pitcher although many have success with heavy rubbermaid type products.

And I agree with the start simple advice. Just stick to 3 or 4 oils to start, let them cure, see what happens to them after a few months, then start playing around with other additions. Read about the properties of each oil/butter so you can determine which and why you'd want to add them.

But mostly, have fun! Use eye goggles and gloves and go for it. Sometimes all the talk about lye is scary. Use it safely and carefully and it will be fun.

Also before you do any of these things - check the regulations on selling CP Soap in The UK. The UK has some rules and regs. and maybe fees that we in the US don't have.
