Teach Soap

I recently tried a "bastille" recipe that was 75% olive and the other 25% coconut oil and shea butter. I used 5% super fat and water/goat milk mixture. I ran it through the lye calc just fine, and it looked beautiful! But, after gel there was a layer of lye on top. The soap underneath looked normal, but the top was heavy lye. I poured at a thick trace.

This is the second time this has happened to me! The first time I had a thin trace, so I assumed it was a mixing issue. But this time, it was rather thick! Still a mixing issue? I am using lye from our hardware store rather than what I've previously ordered on the net. Any ideas? Tired of rebatching

What brand of lye was it? At what temp did you combine the oils and lye? Are you using a stick blender?

Did you fragrance it? Some fo's cause separation so that's a possibility too.

It's ComStar pure lye, and they are bead size. I soaped at about 110 and used no fragrance or color.

Where are you purchasing your olive oil from? I had this happen to me once when I used adulterated olive oil.

Also, I don't know about anybody else but the only store brand lye I have used is Rooto (spelling?) Before that I purchased from BB.

ComStar brand is fine - I've used it before and never had a problem.

Another possibility is that your soap may have overheated. Did you insulate it? Soaps made with milk tend to heat up more quickly than soaps made with just water.
