Teach Soap

Is there any problem with pre-mixing oxide or aquamarine colorants and keeping them stored? Also what quantities would you mix? Maybe 1/8 tsp per ounce of oil? Also, could the oils be pre-mixed and stored in a cupboard or refreigerated? This would save time when I finally have the time to make the soap, if I had everything pre-measured and mixed for 2 lb batches. Does anyone else do this? Any problems with it?

I have not done this yet - but I have read in several places that glycerin is the best choice to use not oil.

But I could be wrong - but I think it is common practice to pre mix colors.

I have tried premixing my ultramarines and pigments with glycerin, but didn't care for the outcome. All of my soaps that I used the pre-mixed colorants in were a tad bit softer than normal. Also, it was difficult for me to judge the amount of color I needed (I know...that sounds the opposite of what you'd expect, but it was a problem for me). I used condiment bottles to store the mixtures in and they did for the most part stay nice and mixed well. I was hoping it would save me lots of time, and it did, but I had trouble with my soaps when I used them.
Amanda from Lovin' Soap wrote about this on FB a few months ago and if I can find the post, she gave more specifics and I'll pass the info along.

I wouldn't premix any ultramarines with glycerine or water. I have heard some soapers have issues with mold growing when they did that.

The colours I use only dissolve in oil, not glycerine. If I don't premix them at least a day in advance, for sure I will get little spots of colour scattered throughout the soap. So, I premix and keep small amounts - a couple of ounces - in the refri.
